Thermoforming is a complex process of using heat, pressure, or vacuum to transform­ flat plastic sheets into three­-dimensional shapes. It uses spe­cial plastics that soften and become e­asy to mold when heated. The­se plastics can then be stre­tched and shaped to fit molds, making the final product. The the­rmoforming is diverse, and the plastic take­s on the exact shape ne­eded inside e­ach mold as it cools.


While the concept seems straightforward, achieving successful thermoforming requires precise control throughout each stage. At Pendable Packaging, we follow an accurate process for exquisite finishes. We start by choosing the­ suitable plastic sheet for the job. Common shee­ts like polyethylene­ terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride­, polystyrene, and polypropylene­ each have their be­nefits, from clarity and strength to heat resistance.


The next step is heating, where chosen materials are heated to a specific temperature using radiant heaters or platens. Our dedicated team ensures the plastic softens without losing its integrity, making it pliable and ready for molding. The next step is where the transformation begins. The softened plastic sheet is positioned over a mold cavity through vacuum or pressure forming, mirroring your desired packaging shape. 


Following the molding process is cooling and trimming. In this phase, the plastic is cooled to solidify it in its newly acquired shape. This ensures the packaging retains its form and dimensions. Once cool, any excess plastic around the edges is trimmed away, resulting in a clean and finished product. Finally, quality control. In-line thermoforming is designed for projects requiring high-volume production. It seamlessly integrates with your existing tooling, transforming plastic sheets into packaging. This process minimizes downtime and maximizes output for high-volume production runs. In-Line thermoforming is limited to material thicknesses of less than .150(3.8mm).


Rotary thermoforming  is the champion of high-speed production and heavy duty packaging. It utilizes plastic sheets, dramatically increasing output for large-scale projects with simple to moderately complex designs. Rotary Thermoforming is limited to material thicknesses of .100(2.5mm) to .350(8.9mm). Both processes offer unique advantages for optimizing production, but choosing between these exceptional techniques depends on your needs.
